- Looking for Contacts in OZ
- (A request from the U.K.)
-
- In March of this year I am doing a tour around some of the Universities in
- Australia. Having commenced on a three year programme of research into the
- design and construction of emergency shelter for disaster relief in November
- 1992, I would like to use the opportunity of being in Australia to make
- contact with disaster relief/management institutions in the cities that l will
- be visiting. I have included an itinerary below and if there are any
- institutions who would have the time for a possible visit/discussion then l
- would be grateful if they could get back to me at The Research Centre, 24,
- Crawley Green Road, Luton, Bedfordshire, LU1 3LF, England.
-
- 4 March - arrive Adelaide
- 13 March - arrive Melbourne
- 28 March - arrive Sydney
- 1 April - arrive Newcastle
- 3 April - arrive Brisbane
- 8 April - return to England.

- IDNDR Secretariat Calls for More National Committees
-
- (Adapted from "Stop Disasters," the newsletter of the United Nations
- International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction [IDNDR])
-
- By June 1992, 102 countries had already established national committees and/or
- focal points for the IDNDR; however at least another 70 countries with
- interests in disaster management and mitigation had yet to establish such
- institutions. Indeed, of the 102 countries that had nominated IDNDR officers,
- only 60 had actually formed national committees. Although some nations have
- clearly already made significant progress, others are in need of international
- assistance to establish and accomplish their goals. To meet this end, the U.N.
- IDNDR Secretariat in Geneva has announced that it will be pleased to assist
- any country that wishes to establish an IDNDR national committee. For further
- information, contact Ms. Maris Kohn, National Committee Expert, IDNDR
- Secretariat, United Nations, Palais des Nations, CH-1211 Geneva 10,
- Switzerland.

- The Global Seismic Hazard Assessment Program
-
- (Adapted from "EOS-Transactions of the American Geophysical Union", December
- 1, 1992)
-
- The Scientific and Technical Committee of the United Nations International
- Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR) has endorsed, as an
- international demonstration project, the Global Seismic Hazard Assessment
- Program (GSHAP), with the full support of UNESCO and the International Council
- of Scientific Unions (ICSU). The primary goal of GSHAP is to ensure that
- national agencies are able to assess seismic hazard in a regionally
- coordinated fashion and with advanced methods. . . .
-
- The GSHAP strategy is to establish regional centers on all continents for
- coordinating the compilation of unified geophysical and geological data bases
- and assessing seismic hazard. A global goal of GSHAP is to define common
- guidelines for dealing at each regional center with the four main components
- of seismic hazard assessment: earthquake catalogs, seismotectonics and
- earthquake source zones, strong seismic ground motion, and seismic hazard
- computation. . . .
-
- The Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica of Rome has been designated to serve as the
- GSHAP Coordinating Center. . . .
-
- For more information, contact D. Giardini, Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica,
- Rome; or P. Basham and M. Berry, Geological Survey of Canada, Ottawa, Canada.

- Caribbean Landslide Project Launched
-
- (Taken from the "International Landslide Research Group Newsletter," December,
- 1992)
-
- The Cuban Academy of Sciences in collaboration with the University of Mexico
- is undertaking a project dealing with landslides, avalanches, and other
- processes shaping landforms at the interfaces of the North American, Cocos,
- and Caribbean Plates. Scientists interested in more information should contact
- Dr. Jose R. Hernandez Santana, Instituto Geografia, Calle 13, No. 409 esquina
- a F. Vedado, CP 10400 La Habana, Cuba; fax: 537-338212.

- EPICC - A BC Project to Prepare for Disasters
-
- Recognizing that the Canadian province of British Columbia is vulnerable to
- several natural hazards - including potentially catastrophic earthquakes - the
- provincial government and private enterprise have joined to form the British
- Columbia Emergency Preparedness for Industry and Commerce Council (EPICC), an
- organization to help business and industry prepare for earthquakes and other
- major disasters. EPICC will distribute research and preparedness information
- through a newsletter, a business preparedness manual, and seminars. The
- organization will be funded by both the business community and emergency
- preparedness organizations. For more information contact: Emergency
- Preparedness for Industry and Commerce Council, c/o Munich Reinsurance Co. of
- Canada, 1110-1040 West Georgia Street, Vancouver, BC, Canada V6E 4H1, (604)
- 687-5522; fax: (604) 681-7530.
